MLP: Major League Poem

Daring to play with words
playing catch with synonyms and metaphors
semantic swings with an occasional bunt
poking and prodding the vowel sounds
testing their will to cooperate with the consonants

Making up the rules as it moves along
a 4 seam phrase or a hyperbole change up
pine tar on the pen
so it does not slip off the page
multiple edits in an attempt to achieve thirty percent success

Daring to play like grizzled pros in prose
with a telepathic conscience
only a double play combo knows
superstitious, rhetorical routines
that are the pre-write rituals

searching for that one adjective
the one you look for when you are 0 for 4
the one that will describe that thing
with one swing---
Perfection.
